As soon as the Kevin Kolb era began in Philadelphia, it may have ended.
Kolb struggled against the Packers defense and could only muster the Eagles offense to a quick 3 point lead in the first quarter that quickly dissolved into a 20-3 deficit by the second half.
Kolb had a friendly greeting with Clay Matthews in the second quarter. Matthews apparently has never heard of the phrase "Sophomore slump." Matthews chased Kolb down from behind, sacking him and forcing a fumble.
Kolb appeared dazed and confused and would return, only to be ruled out of the second half due to a concussion.
For the record, Matthews was the Packers top defender with 7 tackles, 2 sacks, and a forced fumble.
Enter ex-convict and 3-time Pro Bowl backup quarterback Michael Vick. Vick has long been a nemesis of the Packers when he actually played football, including a playoff upset of the Pack at Lambeau Field.
Vick miraculously brought the Eagles back in the second half, while rushing for over a hundred yards and throwing for 177 yards and one touchdown.
However, it was a little too late for the Eagles and the Packers are breathing a sigh of relief over their 1-0 start.
The key phrase for the Packers season opener: room for improvement.
The Packers offense, considered one of the top offenses in the NFL, struggled mightily.
Aaron Rodgers threw an uncharacteristic two interceptions and fewer than 200 yards.
However, he also threw two touchdown passes, including a great touch pass down the sideline to Greg Jennings, and a bullet in traffic to Donald Driver.
I think Rodgers will find his groove this weekend at Lambeau Field against the Buffalo Bills.
All things aside, the Packers won.
Unlike the following Super Bowl contenders who all lost: Dallas Cowboys, Minnesota Vikings, San Diego Chargers, and New York Jets.
The Packers had not won in Philadelphia since 1962, and I'm sure McCarthy told his team that a win is a win no matter how ugly or pretty it may be.
The Packers definitely won ugly and did not play up to their potential on either side of the football.
Yet, the standings read: Green Bay Packers 1-0. And that's all that matters.
